Introduction

In the past decades the theoretical concept of ‘Laser applications in Dentistry’ has been established. This concept implies several changes to the widely adopted ‘cut and suture’ and ‘radical’ strategies when managing the caries and gingival procedures in deep cavities. In the past ten years the indication for using lasers on tooth surfaces and mucosal tissues including gingiva, has been extended. New generations of Er, and Diode lasers have been introduced to best dental clinics of world with very high success and patient acceptance rates. Cavity preparation techniques and gingival or oral surgeries using these lasers have been scientifically evaluated in more depth and last but not least many FDA clearances have been achieved for different dental procedures. Thus, there is a need to re-think decision making for either non-, micro- or minimum-invasive treatment options at various tooth and oral mucosa sites to reduce the side effects of conventional dental strategies.

In this course we will discus the details of the laser applications of hard and soft tissue lasers in the esthetic dentistry daily procedures like:

  • Gingivectomy, gingivoplasty, leveling
  • Troughing “retraction”
  • Gummy smile management
  • Crown lengthening with bone reduction
  • Reverse vestibuloplasty
  • Gingival depigmentation
  • Tongue depigmentation
  • Scar correction (tissue plasty)
  • Laser tooth Whitening
  • Removal of veneers by laser

But before going through the applications the participants should understand the laser physics and the tissue interactions and the concept of absorption and penetration of laser light in the human tissues. And because it is a confusing decision to choose which laser for what procedure, so it is important to clear this confusion by simplifying the information about the wavelengths and the benefit of each one of them in the esthetic procedures and help the dentist to choose the right laser for the specific procedure.

The practical part of this course will be on bovine jaw and extracted teeth to give the participants the confident and experience of using the hard and soft tissue lasers these esthetic procedures
